Last Chance to Save Trumbull!

The final day of hearings in the lawsuit by Trumbull parents to stop the closing of the school is this Monday from 10am-5pm at the Dirksen Building, 219 S. Dearborn, Suite 2125. Friends of Trumbull are asking supporters to attend the hearing, even for a short time, to show the judge that there is community support for the school.

Transportation is provided, with buses leaving Trumbull at 10am and 1:30pm on Monday and returning at 12:30pm and 4pm. Friends of Trumbull suggests wearing Trumbull colors of purple and cold. You can call 312-898-0772 with any questions.

More information about the lawsuit and the need for support is in this communication from the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce:

Andersonville Chamber of Commerce

Dear Andersonville business owners and friends,

Andersonville's Trumbull School has one last chance to stay open, and Friends of Trumbull has asked us to help get supporters to the court hearing next Monday.

A court case was brought by parents of two Trumbull students alleging that CPS did not take into account Special Education students when calculating Trumbull's utilization rate. The suit alleges that now Trumbull's Special Education students (which comprised 37% of the student body) are being forced to go to schools that are not as highly rated for their needs as Trumbull.

At a hearing last week, the judge was sympathetic. But CPS is arguing, and the judge is also concerned, that there isn't support from the community for the school since 90% of the students are already enrolled in other schools (which they had to do because they were told Trumbull was closing). We need to show that Andersonville still cares about the school and wants it in our neighborhood.

The final hearing is this coming Monday, August 12 from 10AM - 5PM at Dirksen Federal Building, 219 S. Dearborn, Suite 2125. If you work downtown, or can come downtown for an hour, please stop in at any time during that period. Even a brief appearance would be helpful. There will also be buses leaving from Trumbull at 10AM and at 1:30PM, returning at 12:30PM and 4PM.

Friends of Trumbull recommends wearing Trumbull colors (purple and gold).

If you have questions, you can call 312/898-0772.

We view Trumbull public school as  an essential community asset, serving our diverse population. Its potential closing threatens to leave yet another huge vacant property on Ashland. In addition, the Trumbull building is one of the gems of the Andersonville National Historic District.

Best,

Ellen Shepard
